Another one of my personal heroes is Abraham Lincoln. Today would have been Lincoln’s 200th birthday.
Lincoln is probably most known for his Emancipation Proclamation, which promoted abolishing slavery during his term. He was also the very first Republican President. But he was not always a Republican though. He was initially a member of the Whig Party.
Sadly, most people today do not realize that it was the Republican Party that apposed slavery – NOT the Democrats. The Democrats actually fought to keep slavery! In 1864, Democrats and Republicans positions on slavery and race were very different. Lincoln endorsed the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolishing slavery. The Democrats pledged to return to the South the rights of owning slaves!
In Lincoln’s second inaugural address on March 4, 1865, he spoke of “malice toward none” and “charity for all” in the peace to come. Democrats at the time accused Lincoln of being a tyrant because he believed in civil liberties for all races.
What!? You were never taught that in school? Wow. I’m shocked.
Lincoln served in office as the 16th President of the United States from March 4, 1861 until his death on April 14, 1865. Lincoln was the first President to be assassinated in United States history. One can only wonder what history would have been like had Lincoln survived his second term in office.
