Today is my best friend’s birthday!
JustJack, or Jack for short, is 8 years old today! And as tradition dictates, we will head over to McDonald’s for a birthday cheeseburger.
Jack is aging gracefully I must say. He doesn’t look much different than he did when I first got him. Here he is a few months old. He was the featured dog on Dog of the Day.com back in 2002.
I love dogs and I have had several over the years. But I have to say out of all the dogs I have been with, Jack is by far the smartest dog I have ever met. I am not just saying that because he is my dog or because he is so cute.
Jack does things I have never seen a dog do before. For one, he communicates. No, he doesn’t talk – but I wouldn’t be surprised one day if he started talking to me like Brian on Family Guy. Somehow I know exactly what he is thinking. Maybe he is psychic. But he will come up to me and look at me and somehow I know that he wants to play, wants a cookie, or wants to go outside. The stare he gives me is the same but somehow I know what he wants.
The other thing this dog does that I have never witnessed before – except in movies – is he makes up games. Over the years he has “created” 3 or 4 separate games that we play together. The games use specific toys and I swear have “rules”. Because if you try using the blue ball for the game he invented using the pink ball he won’t play the game. He will actually stop playing and get the right color ball or toy for the game he wants to play with you.
One of his favorite games is basketball retrieval. Throw a basketball across the tennis court, football field, or the back yard and he will not only bring it back to you, he will put it right at your feet. Since the basketball is too big to hold in his mouth, he maneuvers the ball back to you using his snout on either side of the ball. It is amazing. this is his favorite game to play and he invented it! When we play in the yard people driving by actually stop the car to watch. One day I really need to film this.
